Howdy folks. I'm new here and have been lookin for a little help. I have an older model 20 hp chrysler outboard, and have some ?s.She is an old motor and has some quirks I am attempting to iron out. Th model # is VWB27020A 07X, serial # is 10648. I would appreciate any info, and will try any tip or trick. thanks y'all.

1.for some reason I cant seem to keep it running strong in nuetral and even after a min or so it dies out. She runs like a champ when in fwd gear for ever.

2.I cant seem to keep it in reverse, I mean I can find it, but when I give it the throttle she pops out of gear. so needless to say I just havent used reverse at all.

3. I have no cowling so thats a problem cuz I have to keep it covered when not in use, and I dont wanna ruin the points cuz they r hard to come by....so far.

Re: new here

Welcome to the forum. So why did you post your question in the Evinrude/Johnson forum when there is a "Force/Chrysler" forum? You would get better results there.

Idle: carb may be set too lean or the lowspeed circuit may be clogged with varnish or (most likely) The fuel pump diaphragn is hardened and only pumps fuel at higher speeds.

1st step: Replace the fuel pump diaphragm. 2nd step: If the problem persists, remove, disassemble, and clean the carbs.

Shift: Depends upon which year the engine is. However, it is highly likely that the shift linkage is out of adjustment. With age and wear, it is almost always the forward gear that pops out under power. However, it is also possible that the drive dogs were worn and the previous owner reversed the dog clutch in an effort to get more life without spending the 130 bucks for a new part.

If you can post a couple of photos of the engine, upper end and lower unit it would help.

Go to boat marinas and junkyards looking for a cover. Lacking that, try The Chrysler Crew or contact franzmarine@aol.com He may have some used ones.

Re: 20 hp chrysler issues

to answer silvertip, lol, thought i was in th crysler group forum.

to frank, I doubt the carb is the prob cuz I got the motor from an outboard mech, and he replaced th points and was supposed to rebuilt the carb before he gave it to me, so I'm giving him the benifit of the doubt, but its quite possible thats th prob. as for the shift prob, its a 1970 model, I will try to post pics, but usually dont have good luck with that, but will try. I will inquire about the dog clutch and to wether or not he did what u mentioned about reversing things. thanks for giving me a base line to start with.
