I have a 2003 20 Merc, 2 stroke. I'm wondering if this is a Japanese or USA built motor?

I've read other posts where various makers' engines are built all over the planet. So far an excellent performing motor. I have to say that I was really surprised when Merc discontinued its 2 strokes suddenly this year, I'd hoped I was buying into a long-term model run, but I guess I was at the wrong end of it.

Regular 2 stroke outboards are being discontinued everywhere because of poor emissions (except the Evinrude Etec technology which is as good or better than four strokes). This older technology is more polluting and consumes more fuel. However, it is lighter/smaller per hp(more portable) and requires less maintenance(and generally trouble free).

As far as I know, the 4 strokes are asian made... depending on their size, some by Yamaha and others by Nissan/Tohatsu builders.
