We have recently purchased an older 1990 20' Bayliner Trophy with no power. Removed the 120 Force and thinking of 150 Merc/Yamaha but would like some input on how it runs with 120HP first.
Does anyone know what the speed & rpm are on running with a 120 hp?
Thanks for any input.

What's it rated for? A 120 sounds way underpowered for a 20'.

A Force 120 was one of the power options on the Bayliner Trophy models (both the center consoles and the W/A cuddy's), or the purchaser could have upgraded to the Merc 150. You didn't indicate which style hull you have. The W/A is heavier than the CC so performance will be hampered.

I had a 96 W/A Trophy with a Mercury 150 Saltwater series. I can't remember the pitch of the SS prop, so you may have to adjust your toward your liking. Without trimtabs, I was hitting a plan in about 4 seconds and topping out at 49-51 MPH (GPS reading), depending on whether I was with or against wind (5200-5300 RPM). I was cruising easy at 38 MPH @ 4200 RPM.

Everything I have read about the 120 Force put top end around 30-32 MPH with a cruising around 25. If you are planning to upgrade, my personal opinion is that it is certainly worth it.

Given that the 120hp was Force's highest output motor for 1990, it's not surprising that's all the Trophy had on it.....Bayliner could only use what they had available.

I have a 21' center console with a 150; it's fine but sometimes I wish I had a little more; I would not want any less.

But.

Gas prices are more of a factor, so examine your use. if you are typically going solo or just one other person, and/or are not concerned about speed, going toward the smaller size would make more sense.

But.

ordinarily resale is irrelevant on what you do with a 20 year old boat, but if you repower with a new engine, you won't recapture that expense if you sell in the next several years b/c you will be selling an underpowered boat. Depends, then, on what you have in it already.

Most I have read about the OB bayliners with the force engines is a top speed of around 30mph. How much HP is your hull rated for?

Re: 20' Bayliner Trophy with 120 HP

120 seems minimal on a 20' boat like that. My father's Triumph is 20', has a Yamaha 150, and tops out at 42 gps. I'm not sure, but I would think the Trophy would be a heavier boat than a Triumph.

Money aside (yeah, like that's really possible), I think you would be very happy with the upgrade for many reasons (performance, reliability, gas mileage, etc).

Any idea what the GPH is on this motor??? I know the rule is 10 per Hp/Hr...but I think it's more thirsty than that...

I'm asking because I'm using a '97 WA with the Force 120 (and I'm thinking I'm blowing thru fuel way to quick...it looks like about 25-30 GPH!!!
