Well I don't have any experience with the handhelds but I can tell you I've never dropped a dash mounted radio in the water...

Re: 2 way radio

Fixed mount:
Pros:
+Higher output power (25 watt vs up to 5 watt), which helps receivers lock on to your transmission when there are competing signals
+Connected to a longer/higher antenna, which increases range (although you CAN connect a handheld to such an antenna with the proper adapter)
+It's mounted to the boat so it's hard to misplace it

Cons:
-Relies on boat's electrical system, so if that system fails, you can't use the radio to call for help
-You can't take it with you if you have to abandon ship
-A suitable mounting spot may be a problem in small boats

Handheld:
Pros:
+Self-contained unit, independent of external power and antenna; some even have GPS and DSC capabilities
+No issue with mounting
+You CAN take it with you if you abandon ship
+Most float in case you drop it overboard

Cons:
-Lower power
-Shorter/lower antenna (unless hooked up to a boat-mounted antenna)
-You have to remember to keep the battery charged
-Easy to misplace

I like redundancy, so I have both.
