I have a 1999 Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke precision blend outboard on a 17 foot fiberglass center console hull. Started and ran my boat today, after is sat for a week, with no issues. Motor cranked strong and all electrical stuff worked fine, trim, tach etc. After I parked it in the canal I shut off the engine and trimmed it up out of the water to flush. When I tried to re-start to flush I got nothing, no cranking and trim wont work. Oil alert tone was sounding off, so I topped it off and it stopped. Tach turns on but dims when I turn the key or push the trim button, fuel gauge needle also bounces. I checked the fuse on the motor and it is fine. Not sure whats wrong, help.

Clean all connections at the battery and use anti-corrosion gel when you put them back on.

Same motor as mine. It may be a good idea to go over all your electrical connections and fuses, remove, clean, lubricate and tighten then. The high humidity of the marine atmosphere can cause corrosion on these. May also remove the battery and check it for a weak or bad cell.
Good Luck!:)

Cleaned and wire brushed everything at the battery... no luck. I will check the battery itself next. Do you think it could be the alternator?

When you turn the key the light on your tach. should not go dim. It does this because you have a bad connection, probably a ground wire, that is making a short circuit and back feeding power. Great idea to clean up your battery connections, but keep going. Myself I would start at your ignition switch and work back to your engine. Pull each connection apart look for corrosion clean put back together. Good luck!!

Since it happened when you tilted the motor up , that may indicate the problem is at the motor or the cables as the go into the motor as they bend . A voltmeter used to check for voltage drop would be the best way to find the problem. I have found bad cables before, due to internal corrosion. But like said before may be just a loose connection

Figured it out, it's the battery. It took over a liter of water to re-fill, then I put it on the charger for a couple hours and everything is back to normal. At least I have squeaky clean connectins now.. and will be investing in a new battery soon. Thanks to all that lended their advice!
