I'm about to purchase my first boat, a Sea Hunt Escape 175 (v hull, dual console, 17ft). I live in North Carolina, and I'll use the boat for fishing and water sports 2-4 times per month about 6 months out of the year. I'm trying to decide between the Yamaha 2 stroke 90 or 4 stroke 100, which are just about $2000 apart. Although based on my usage, I doubt I'll get my money back in gas and oil savings, I wonder if the 4 is worth the money based on other factors (noise, reliability after non-use, others??) i'm also a bit concerned that the 4 is 95lbs heavier than the 2. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions.
thanks

Howdy, RandJ.

A couple of opinions:

The Yammy 90 is a fine engine, but low in torque because it is only 70ci. A Johnson 90 is over 100 ci and makes a lot more torque.

If you want the best of 4 stroke advantages, I suggest you look for an EFI 4 stroke. I have a Suzuki DF70 4 stroke on my Boston Whaler 17 and am very happy with it.

If your boat can handle it, Merc, Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki all make excellent 115 EFI engines, though the Honda is awfully heavy at over 500lb. The others are in the vicinity of 400-415 lb.

Good luck. :)

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke

thanks JB. sounds like a carburated 4 stroke (yam100) isn't really worth the extra cash over the 2 strokes i'm looking at. the boat is rated up to 135hp, so it could handle 115, but thats getting away from my price target, and probably my needs.
also, i've read in other similar posts that in other states, 2 strokes aren't being allowed in fresh water lakes. i doubt NC is leading the charge on this, but i'd hate to end up with a motor that ran fine, but was banned on my nearby lakes.

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke

The Union of California Socialist Republic at this point is the only state that bans 2 cycle and only from certain water bodies. ALL 2 cycles that are currently produced will be allowed or grandfathered elsewhere as far as I know......You can not "force" people to trash 1 year old products legaly manufactured and used unless you subcribe to the "commie state" (Cal.) way of doing things. This is the stuff that class action suits are made of...

What Flyboy you gonna start dropping bombs on us already?
Do you want us all dead, or just imprisoned?
Last time I looked at my paystub Uncle Sam had a dang good week at my expense.
Since your not aware that the county I'm a registered voter in was a "RED" zone last Presidential election, your off topic post was foolish.
There are plenty of places to post your ignorance on the WWW. Why here, on a boating, fishing and having fun site?

If you want to flame or debate about the fine example Florida has been lately, take it here, CH..CH.. CH..CHADboy :D
bachelor@stormnet.com
