First of all i would like to thank those who have given me their expetise over this forumn.I would like to know what we can expect from the conversion of 2 to 4 stroke engines in the future. will it be difficult to purchase parts, or will manufactures contintue produce parts 10 years aftermarket like they do with cars.

What makes you think two strokes are going away? The carburetors are are going away for most two strokes and four strokes.
Backfire

I,ve read and spoke with some dealers. it was my understanding that there will be no more 2 stroke out boards manufactured by 2006 in the US.New EPA rules

Somebody better tell Bombardier. Their new E-techs are going to have a 7 year warranty.

They can manufacture a 1 cycle if they can meet the emission standards.

:) I think that some peolpe get confused when they hear that by 2006 all 2 strokes will be band!!! They say that the direct fuel injection is as efficent or better then the 4-stroke

My understanding is that only the old 2stroke carburator engines will be gone!!!

The DFI meet all 2006 emission standards from what I've been hearing!!! ;)

Two strokes are here to stay...they will be of the Optimax type or in Tohatsu terms "TLDI"..Two strokes WILL NOT BE BANNED!! This is some dealer trying to scare you into buying a new over bloated, over priced four stroke!

As far as parts availability goes if there's demand it will be met. There are plenty of engines no longer made for which parts can be had. Whether they are no longer made because of the EPA or some other reason is irrelevant.

And existing carbed two-strokes will be grandfathered I would presume.

The new evinrude E-Tec (a 2-Stroke) is actually cleaner than any 4-Stroke made. Look at the data published. It is much MUCH cleaner when the Carbonmonoxide is measured. Two-Strokes are here to stay!

Re: 2 stroke to 4 stroke conversion in 2006

To back up the statement made by tym42ply,

According to data on the EPA's web site:
- the Honda 90 has a NOx+HC of 16.82 and a CO of 192.06.
- the Yamaha F90 has a NOx+HC of 16.84 and a CO of 211.79.
- and the E-TEC 90 has a NOx+HC of 16.80 and a CO of 69.81.
These figures are averaged over the engines entire rpm (operating) range.

According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, a 1200ppm exposure to Carbon Monoxide (CO) (I believe in an hour) is considered lethal.
- a stern-drive 4-stroke is around 65,000ppm.
- a carbureted 4/S outboard is around 43,000ppm.
- an EFI 4/S outboard is around 25,000ppm.
- a stern-drive 4/s with a catalytic converter is around 11,000ppm.
- E-TEC comes in at around 600ppm.
These CO/ppm levels are based on idle rpm only, so there's something to think about the next time your out trolling around all day long.

I also understand they are doing some particulate matter testing on E-TEC and its every bit as clean as a 4-stroker.

2-stroke going away? Not hardly!

-John
