Thanks for your reply, hopefully we didn't damage it as we ran it as a 4 stroke, now when putting it to high throttle it just revs with no power, still starts and idles good though. fingers crossed

If you ran that without oil the motor is done. It will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

If it revs, but goes nowhere, you might have a pooched prop hub.
I am assuming it is a 1976 engine, so it would be a 2 stroke. For how long and and how fast did you run without oil in the gas? How many gallons of gas only?

Gee whiz! Four strokes have a crankcase just like your car and there is a dipstick to check the engine oil. Two strokes (smaller sizes) have an oil tank on the side of the engine and in some cases a separate oil tank on the floor of the boat. Four strokes have valve covers (cam covers) just like your car whereas two strokes have spark plugs that stick straight of what is rather flat cylinder head.

Seeing that you did not see the difference between 4 stroke and 2 stroke, you really should take this outboard to a repair shop, tell your story and ask them to check.
