So the pundits here say synthetic is better than mineral oil. I don't want to debate that. What i want to know is if semi-synthetic is better than mineral oil, or worse than synthetic, half way in between or a total waste of money.
You asked an oil question! Do you really think the topic will NOT be debated and that those who respond will have a meaningful opinion? For two-stroke engines, the only thing concrete about the three products is that conventional oil smokes the most and is generally the least expensive. Semi-synthetic smokes less and may cost more. Full-synthetic smokes least and costs the most. Other than that you enter "debate" territory. For four-stroke engines omit the smoke part from the discussion. If a four-stroke "uses" conventional oil it will use more semi- or full-synthetic. If a four-stroke has an oil leak it will leak more semi- or full-synthetic. Which one is best? The question is best for what? And now for the typical response which most will read: I've used xxxxx and never had a problem. Personally -- I've used them all and never lost an engine (and I'm not a young pup by any means). In fact I own a 1949 Johnson that began life running on 30W auto oil because two-stroke oil didn't exist. That engine has never been apart.
It has been conclusively shown that not mixing any oil in the gas for a two-stroke will dramatically shorten the engine life.
