I recently bought a pontoon with a 2000-2002 Mercury 40 2 stroke. The motor has oil injection but the previous owner said he always used premix. His reasoning was that he was worried about damaging the motor if the oil injection ever failed. My question is this: would there be any issue with draining all the premix fuel and beginning to run regular gas using the oil injection system? Also is there any way to check to make sure the oil injection is working?

Just fire up the injection with the pre-mix still in tank, run with the pre-mix, run that tank down and re-fill with regular gas on next fill up. It'll just smoke a tad more, no biggie.

BUT be sure as your running both and the PO didn't disconnect (or it broke) something he's not telling you.........i.e., Make extra sure the oil injection is 100% working before the transition to reg gas starts/goes into effect.

BTW, when re-building/servicing the oil injection sys, merc suggests to run both as suggested above,........A tank of pre-mix tank in parallel with the oil injection for that period of that break in tank.

Also, after you run some of the premix through the motor with the oil in the injection tank, you can top up the fuel, top up the oil injection tank and calc how much of each was used to see if the injection rate is correct.
