Ok so we bought a pontoon boat. It has a 2002 90hp 2 stroke engine. Has been running and starting great. Got up the river alarm stats beeping. ......... beep beep beep hi pitch we are idling and then going slowly then in neutal again to see what the alarm is. No mor oil in the oil tank. So we accelerate hi speed alarm stops. Then we have to stop about 20 min down river once we stop engine cut off and wont start back up. Added oil and its turning over just wont start up! Any ideas?

You possibly toasted engine. Alarm should have kicked in before the tank ran dry. Just wondering how long you ran it with no oil. Do a compression test and see if any damage was done.

No oil in the tank and you then hammer the throttle!!!!!!! A marine techs dream. That is why boats have alarms. And just like your car, gauges were removed for awhile because people didn't understand what they meant even though an idiot light also generally came on. So idiot lights became the norm for years and people still ignored them. We are now back to gauges, idiot lights, and "limp home" mode which the car itself engages. So I guess we could eliminate both the gauges and the lights. Yes - I know I shouldn't poke a finger in an open wound but folks continue to shoot themselves in the foot. In this case a single quart of oil on board (just in case), or simply checking the oil level every time before leaving the dock could have saved what is likely to be an expensive engine repair. Perhaps others who read this and are equally cavalier about checking their fuel and oil levels before each trip will be educated as to the consequences of not doing so.
