Hey everyone, I have a few questions..

I have a '70 Evinrude 6 HP Fisherman
My first question is about a lower unit oil leak. The past few months I have been tinkering with this thing trying to get it running. Well, after replacing nearly the whole fuel system, it runs. After running it in a trash can for a while, I pulled it out and put it on the stand. A few hours later I went back out into the garage and noticed some oil leaking. There are four bolts that hold the lower unit on and there was oil slowly dripping out. I cleaned everything up and tightened the bolts( not seriously loose but noticeable). I ran it a few more times and no oil leak. So yesterday I had it on the boat and on the lake for the very first time and it ran pretty well. However, when I got home, I noticed the prop was had oil all over it. It looked like there oil was coming out of where the water is sucked into the motor just above the prop.. Is it a bad seal, gasket, a crack? Any ideas?

Second, after pulling the carb on and off a few times, I put everything back together and pulled on the cord. When released, it made a grinding noise. Ok, let me back up a bit.. To take the carb off, the pull start needs to be unbolted and moved to the side, but not removed..The pull start was unbolted and moved and then put back on about 4 times before this started happening. Im stumped, does someting need to be greased, replaced?

Thanks for any help or suggestions, it's much appreciated.

Unburnt oil will come out in the exhaust as a matter of course. This may be normal.
You can check whether there is a L/U leak by pulling the bottom drain plug and checking for any water ingress.

I have the same problem with the recoil starter, I'll be interested to see if any suggestions are offered on that. I have an OEM manual and don't see anything in it on this topic re: maintenance.
It sounds to me like the spring is dry, but I am not sure exactly how this is laid out.

Thank ya sir, I'll try and drain the oil in the next day or so and see if there is any water visible. I do have another question since on the subject, I still do not yet have a service manual..How many quarts of oil should it take and 80w or 90w?

if you'll google..leeroy's ramblings..scroll to outboard repair..6 hp....he's written up the vertical recoil starter r&r with a good diagram of the components...check marineengine.com for a pricelist and availability of starter component prices < eye opener >...the lower unit is filled from the drain plug until fluid comes out the vent plug .both should be straight slot screws..don't mess with the phillips head...seems like it's less than a pint of fluid...I used 90w marine grade as it was supposed to lube better with some water infiltration as opposed to straight 90w..90w synthetic is also available..if you remove the drain and vent screws, you should replace the seals for them as well....they resemble nylon washers and are available from iboats as well as other places

Hey guys, just an update.. I have not ran the motor in a week, and it is not longer leaking oil. I plan on taking it out thursday and I plan on checking the oil before and after to see if anything is happening. My next step, in the next few days, is to buy a service manual to see what all is going on with this thing. I'll keep you guys posted.
