2 Probs: high oil pressure when accelerating; unidentified ground cable

Hey guys. Help would be much appreciated.

I have a 99 Four Winns Horizon 180 w/ Volvo Penta 4.3L GL.

1st problem is: When accelerating, the oil pressure gauge is almost always in the high red zone and sometimes, sometimes, will lower out of the red zone. What could my problem be? Bad releif valve or is that not a common problem?

2nd problem: I was working on the exhaust and noticed a loose engine block ground cable just dangling around in the rear engine below the distributor cap area. Anyone know where this should be bolted to?

Thanks in advance.

Is this a set up?

The reason I ask, is don't you see the possible relationship between the two problems?

If the guage sender doesn't have a good ground (Like a block ground!) it will not be accurate.

The block ground goes to the battery - bus. Or if there is already one there, then it may go to some other large component like the bell housing to provide continuity for the outdrive.

If there is already a good heavy ground from the block to the battery, you need to install a T fitting and a manual guage where your oil pressure sender is. That way you can tell if your pressure is really high or the sender/guage is faulty.

Haha, no setup.

It is not the main grounding cable. It is maybe a 16 or 18 gauge black ground bolted to engine block with ring connection and only about 6 inches long. I'm not sure the 2 problems are related, but they wierdly could be, but don't think so.

Where would the pressure sender be located?

Another note would be my speedometer does not work either. I tried cleaning plug connections near the rear where I noticed it exiting out near the drive, but that did not work. I did notice the speedometer needle jump around between 0 and 5 mph while at idle speed, but stopped.

The pressure sender is usually near the oil filter. Check the manuals for your engine in the adults only sticky for confirmation.

I have no idea where the wire should connect. Try to identify a component that is seperated by rubber or some other insulating material in the vicinity. It sound like a bonding wire (Corosion prevention).

There are many types of speedos. Most are pitot tube based, which aproximates speed by a proportional pressure signal. This pressure is read by the guage and converted to mph/kph. My experience is that it is usually the diaphram in the guage which gets hardened over time.

My fix is to get a gps. It seemed more cost effective than another speedo.
