2-cycle oil in generator?

Good day, I'm on my fourth day without power to the house and the 5 kw generator is on it's 14th hour of running. I got to thinking that the upper lube effects of 2-cycle oil might really help the rings and valves. I just started using a 150:1 (fuel to oil) ratio as a starting point.
Any thoughts pro or con? Jim Reed, jhreed@epix.net

PS: Am sitting in 17 inches of snow and ice...

What engine drives your Genset, Jim?

I would not put TCW oil in a 4 stroke or in it's fuel.

jim,

I'm with JB on this one. 2-cycle oil will do nothing in a four stroke engine except coke up the valves and guides. Not a good plan.

If that is a gasoline genset, it'll be okay. If it is a diesel genset, dont add anything to it. You don't need to add anything to it. All you are doing is causing pollution and possibly fouling plugs earlier. If it needed oil the manufacturer would have said so. Leave it alone.

If I was going to put anything in the gas it would be Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam.

Re: 2-cycle oil in generator?

JB, Sorry on the delay, had lost power for about four days. The engine is a Tecumseh, 9 - 10 hp four-cycle aircooled, single cylinder driving a
5 kw generator at 3600 rpm. I guess my thinking
was that using just a 200:1 ratio would be great
for cylinder wear and valve stem lubrication.

Your thoughts on that? Jim Reed

jim,

You DO NOT need to do that.

As I mentioned previously, the 4-stroke is designed to run on regular gasoline-nothing else.

The two cycle oil is detrimental. It will coke up the rings and valve guides and lead to the trouble you are trying to avoid.

Ahoy, Jim.

Ditto DJohns.

If oil in the fuel would be beneficial, Tecumseh would recommend it, and I can assure you they don't.

Good luck. :)

Thank you all for your inputs, I'm on the path of none unless I hear creditable information to the contrary... now, for the BIG snow... jr.

Jim,

Not to be contrary but, if you didn't think we were credible, why did you ask?

Call the manufacturer.

The whole point of the outboard industry switching to four strokes is to eliminate just what you are wanting to do.

Do you put 2-stroke oil in the gas of your car or truck? Of course not. Same principles apply.
