2.9 ford ranger misfires at cruise.

To start with, this is a cool sub-forum. Here's my problem. My old (86) truck motor had a blown head gasket so I had the local mech swap out with another motor I had bought. Used. Now it runs good while giving it the gas, but while coasting it misses bad. It does idle smooth, kinda wants to "load up" sometimes. I just don't want to go buying plugs, filters, pump whatever if it may be something simple. Any thoughts motorheads?

I like the injector idea. I don't think it has a carb vent. Can an injector be manually inspected and cleaned or are they a sealed unit?

Fuel injection problem, I have been through it a couple of times now, try the sea foam or an injector clearer. you can do as I did, pick up a new set of injectors for about $100 and have them installed, works out real nice. Ebay is your friend, when it comes to auto parts.

Ooooh, the 2.9L is an old girl.

It was a very simple system, yet EEC 4.

The things to look at are:

1. Plugs.

2. MAF (mass air flow sensor)

3. Injectors.

Look at the plugs, any of them real clean? If so, you may have a head gasket issue.

The 2,8, 2.9, 4.0 engines are a bear to add coolant to. You really need to be:

1. Very patient-add-burp-add-burp-on and on.
2. Invest in having the system vacuum filled.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try the seafoam. Start with the "easy" fix and go from there. No way to check which injector may be bad??

I had an '86 Jimmy with a 2.8 V6 that did EXACTLY that,
It was a bad plug wire, FWIW
