What is the best deal online for a complete long block or short block with parts to complete it for $2,500 or less. I will be able to bolt on any accessories from my late 80's sbc but the block is junk. The motor will be bolted to a Alpha 1 outdrive so I would like to find around 300 hp. So far Rapid O or Michigan Motors seen to have the best prices. Any comments, suggestions, pros/cons, or helpful links would be great! Lastly, what 4 barrel carb and intake would you recommend to me on a fresh water 22' boat mainly used for cruising and some recreation.

If you want to save some money, and have good externals, then a new crate engine would be your best bet. The one above is from Pace Chevy, click on the picture for details. You can put your manifold and carb of choice on there, Marine of course, and you are good to go. I would recommend an Edlebrock carb from Summit Racing. They have good prices on their marine carbs.

Here's the carb I would recommend - it is the marine version of Edlebrock's performer series.

One thing to keep in mind with the above block, is that it has a two piece rear main. If your's is a one piece rear main, there will be some additional items, that you may need for either the rear mount or coupler, but they can be replaced for far less than the $2500 you are looking at.

Re: $2,500 for a SBC 350...

I have never bought a marine carb from any maker, but have messed with Holley and Edelbrock for street rods and 4x4s and have found the Edelbrocks troublesome. Any time I have had a prob with an Edelbrock, the problem was resolved by simply swapping it out for a Holley. Anecdotal, I know, and plenty will disagree, but I know a lot of guys who have had the same experience. I have a brand new Edelbrock 750 in the garage as a result. Good luck in any case.
