2.5 litre 252FTHRCTR OMC I/O-noise and then died

I have a 1983 Landau pontoon with a 125 hp I/0 OMC stern drive motor. It was running great for about 4 hours trolling and then I went to full throttle for about 1/4 a mile and it made a noise that sounded like bearings going bad on a fan motor and died instantly. It would not start for a few minutes and then I had to throttle up to get it to run. It made the same noise a few more times and died everytime while I limped back to the boat ramp. Any ideas what I should look for?

Change the lube from all 3 outdrive compartments...(intermediate, upper, lower) see what flows out

could be the upper has suffered a catastrophic failure - more common than failures of the other two

can also remove the outdrive, supply water to the motor and see if it runs.
try turning the ball gear on the upper clockwise by hand once the drive is removed and see how it feels
