1987 2.3L Omc Cobra. I had the boat out with my wife and on the way home I saw the volts dropping slowly. I thought the alternater went out so I did not stop and went back to the dock. I got the boat home check it and the belt came off, did not break just came off. Based on the rubber dust it had been off for a while.

I replaced the belt charged the battery and the next day I took it out. The engine steadily climbed to 230 degrees. I stop jumped out to check for a clog where it sucks the water in. Nothing there. Let it cool took off and it climbed again. I took the inlet hose off going into the termostat housing. I found two small pieces of rubber stuck in there. I left the hose off turned the engine over and it was pumping water fine out of the inlet hose. I put it back together and it ran hot still.

I took it home and took the thermostat housing off and the thermostat was broken. I replaced it the following day. Took it out and still the same thing temp shot up. I took the thermostat out, and tried again still ran hot.

The engine also was very hard to start when it was at 230 degrees. I am not sure if this is just from heat soak or what.

I thought it might be timing. I got a timing gun put on the ear muffs in the driveway and it was set at 20 degrees. I adjusted it to 10 degrees per the manual. Temp shot up in the driveway again as it had been. It was also running bad when it shot up.

Any ideas on what this could be? Water pump is my next thought . Where would the rubber pieces of came from that I found in the system? Would the belt coming off burnt up the water pump?

I know alot about car engines but I am a rookie on marine stuff.

Thanks for any help.

Have u looked at the impeller in the lower unit water pump? Keep running it at that temp & you're asking for trouble.

That is the First place to look on a Cobra. Replace the impeller every 2 years period, weather you use the boat or not.

You may want to pull the hose to your heat exchanger too, I'll bet it has impeller pieces in too. And who knows when and where they will show up later.

Is it difficult to change the impeller? Is there some place on line with diagrams to show how to change it? I did an impeller on a Force L-drive once, and it wasn't too bad, but I had a manual that came with the boat. That was the ONLY good thing about that boat. :)

Thanks for the info!!!

Replacing the impeller on the OMC Cobra is about as easy as it gets.
Get the replacement kit so you have everything you need.

There is a long triangle looking piece on the outdrive. Take the three bolts off and remove it. There will be a round cover with three more bolts. Remove them take the cover off, pull the impeller, grease up the new one and slide it in.
