2.1 volvo bayliner

please help. my neighbor has a bayliner with 2.1 volvo engine we just tryed to tune up. points,plugs cap we have no manual for it. what is the correct gap for the points and plugs? it tries to start but has yellow spark, and backfires. any help will be appreaciated.

Yellow spark is usually a defective coil, or wire to / from it. Your backfire can come from a BUNCH of stuff. With that 4 banger I'd take a real close look at your timing. I don't know your proper point gap but I would think .17 should put you in the ballpark somewhere + -. If you have purchased new plugs for the motor they should be gapped correctly from the factory.
If all else fails just stop. Take a really good break away from it and do a little more research.
It will all come together for you. :D
