Hey guys, I have recently gotten into motors and boating now that I have finally found a rig to use. I was actually given an old Crestliner 16 foot deep V and a 95' 28 SPL. Both worked but needed some love. I repainted and refurbished the boat and then took after the motor, the guy gave it to me because it was taking up space and the motor never ran very good. Well, after putting a carb kit and fuel pump kit in it, along with replacing both intake gaskets and the primer cover I have a motor that runs like I think it should. It actually starts!

On to my questions, first, is there anything one should look for as far as special concerns or gremlins this particular motor has? Does anyone know why Johnson produced a 28hp Motor? Seems like an odd duck. Finally, is there a way to add HP to this motor? I know in some instances you can swap as little as a carb to bump up a power class, such as from a 9.9 to a 15. Can you go from this 28 to say a 35? or does Johnson switch to a 3 cyclinder block for that version?

At any rate, thanks in advance for answering my questions. I have already learned a great deal just browsing old threads. I look forward to participating here.

the 28 is considered a commercial motor, you have to premix your fuel, rather than having the auto mix feature. it basically is a 30 hp motor, i would rather have a 28 than a 30 imho.
