1984 Conroy x-19 with 120 mercruiser 4 cyl.

This is my first boat and first post.

Got the boat from a neighbor, ran earlier this year but now will only start with gas dumped into carb then stalls once that runs out.

He though he got water in fuel and pumped tank and refilled and issue continues.

What I've done so far.

Cleaned anti syphon valve, checked fuel screen inside intake pipe, new fuel filter, took apart fuel pump (the small 1/8 hose was clogged and so was the barb fitting) clean all components of the fuel pump when apart.

At this point I'm lost on what to do next. Don't think its the gas because I stuck the hose into a regular gas can, no barb just bare hose and still would run. I don't know if the barb would make a difference. I can see gas spray into carb so don't think its the pump but I'm lost at this point.

Thank you for the time and responses.

welcome aboard

if it sat, your float and needle/seat can be stuck/plugged. also the inlet filter on the carb could be plugged

check the fuel pump pressure. should be 4-7 psi

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... If it runs off a remote gas can, the fuel tank must be the problem,....

Well i rebuilt the carb and still have the same issue, tried 2nd fuel source to rule that out, same thing. New fuel line from fuel pump to carb is not factory, put in a brake line about foot and a half longer but still filling up with fuel tnough. Still lost for source of inability to start, only fires when fuel dumped into the carb and then only runs till that fuel runs out.

Check the choke action, also are you pumping the throttle when you first start?

First post says it not fuel, this post says its not getting fuel. what is it? Are you getting spark?

Sounds like it will run IF (big IF) you pour gas down the carb, but another post contradicts this

Sorry for the bad phraseing on that 2nd post still new to all this and trying my best to explain. When i had someone over with me before i rebuilt the carb i could see gas spray into the carb but issue remained the same, only start when gas poured into the carb and then would die when that gas was burnt off. (Havent rocked throttle to double check its still spraying since rebuilt)Rebuilt the carb thinking maybe crap or what not in needles as one person suggested. Was some flakes and in carb but nothing glaringly wrong or so it seemed to me. After reassembly issue remains the same. How do you check automatic/ thermostat choke?
