I was riding my waverunner for about 1.5 hours then slowed to idle speed. After about 10 seconds at idle it just died. The engine turns over but I'm not getting spark. I changed the plugs and still no spark. I immediately think its the coil. Could I be right or is it something else maybe?

you need to test it
might be a bad start/stop switch or laynard

Thanks Justintime. How would I go about testing the startstop switch? I'm pretty good about dis/reassembling parts. Are you referring to the the assembly on the handlebar? Would I need to put a meter on it and look for shorts, grounds, continuity etc? Are the wires color coded? Thanks for the reply!

I've got a new lanyard so I dont think that could be the cause for preventing the spark from working. The digital display works fine when I crank the engine. Would a bad start/stop switch affect the display or not?:

check all fuses first

sometimes it's as simple as a dirty ground wire from the battery to the engine block,, clean the ends and see what happens, does it have a security code that needs to be punched in to the info center??

Re: 1999 yamaha waverunner 1200xl no spark

I spoke to my mechanic and he had me disconnect the black/white wire module to isolate the stop start switch. Still no spark. He said it could be a bad CDI. The digital display/dashboard is still illuminated, so I asked if that would be affected by the CDI. He told me to disconnect the wires going to the dash and check for spark then. When I disconnect them it wont turn over. I'm not giving up!!
