Okay to begin with i just bought a boat with a 1999 yamaha 90 2 stroke. When i start it in nuetral the prop spins forward. When i oush the control towards reverse it actually goes into nuetral.

I took the boat out yesterday fir a test ride and went to put into reverse and it would just rev up and make alot of clicking noise.

I took off the lower unit and it has the star type shift shaft. In nuetral when its hooked up to the motor it ratchets lightly in both directions. In forward it can turn clockwise but not ccw.

In reverse it barely catches and it wont move more than two inches each way.

How do i fix this? I believe it was installed wrong after previous owner replaced water pump. I cant seem to find nuetral when turning the shifter on the lower unit with pliers. When i do it still lightly clicks when soun in each direction. Is the lower unit in “no mans land” ?

secondly, the steering hook nuts are rusted badly. (The part that is connected to the steering arm via two muts and it hooks to the end of the steering linkage.) How should i go about replacing these? Will the studs still be there if i breaj the rusted nuts apart? Or will it have to be drilled out? Or how would you do it? Ill attach pics. Thanks.

Put gearcase in FORWARD.-------It will lock up one way and ratchet the other way, that is normal-----Now install the lower unit with control in forward.----Now check cable adjustment as PO may have messed it up.

Drop the lower unit, no matter the position of gear. Have a friend move the throttle lever from neutral to forward, to neutral, to reverse, etc, as you visually confirm the rotation of the shift shaft. To my knowledge, moving into gear from neutral to forward causes the shift shaft to rotate clockwise, back to neutral counter, neutral to reverse counter again.

Now, wrap a towel around the lower units gear shifter and lock on vice grips onto the shifter. Use your friend again to turn crankshaft clockwise as you turn the shifter. If shifter does not turn clockwise, this means the gear box is in forward gear. If does not turn counterclockwise, it's in reverse. Find the middle position (neutral) and leave the shifter there. Move the control box throttle lever to neutral. Reinstall lower unit.

Could be that some one trying to force the lower into revese without the clutch dogs lined up and bent/twisted something.
time to open it up and have a look see.

I found the shift shaft twisted on my brothers C60 along with the pin thru the prop shaft bent

How would i go about tearig apart the lower unit? Do i have to drop lower unit again? And are there two bolts holding my gears in behind the prop or will i have to use a puller? Is it pretty simple to do yourself? Ive never gone inside a lower unit

service manual should be had when working on a motor.
Yes a puller is needed and steps need to be done in proper order
Seeing you do not know how to do this and probably do not have the tools either read up all you can on it, and then make up you mine if you want to try it yourself.
or take it to a trusted dealer to let them handle your problem

Could i remove the shift rod and if its bent replace it without pulling apart the rest of the lower unit?

There may be available used or rebuilt lower units for your motor that would bolt right on....and could be easier/cheaper than repairs on your unit....depending on what's wrong with it. Mine is a 1999 C90 Yamaha very similar to yours.....Good luck and keep us posted on your progress on this....
