It's been 4 years since we've replaced the water pump. I can't remember if it was the circulating pump or the water pump. Can you tell I'm confused about the 2? We have no overheating problem at this time, but want to take preventative measures and replace what we should to ensure we don't start overheating while on vacation. Which of the 2 would be best to replace? I've heard that replacing the impeller isn't sufficient, and that you should replace the entire pump, since the veins in the pump are probably as worn as those on the impeller. Help please???

Ayuh,... Unless the Circulating pump is leaking, leave it alone....

Usually the Impeller can be changed, rather than the Whole Pump,...
Unless it was run dry,+ Trashed the Whole thing..

Probably Best thing to do is Pull it,+ Look...

I've NEVER EVER run it dry :D If the impeller is worn though, wouldn't it make sense that the veins inside the pump are just as worn?? The S/N is 10180151

On my 1998 Volvo 5.7L raw water pump, the impeller kit came with a 6 legged brass piece which was held in with a single 10 mm bolt. This brass piece compressed the fins on the rubber impeller. I'd visually check the pump housing for score marks/scratches while it was tore apart, replace the brass piece (which never showed any signs of wear after 2 years or 100 hours) and replace the impeller.

Unless you are running in some awful muddy/sandy water, the rubber impeller should wear out well before the brass pump housing.

Is it most common to need to replace the pump or components for the raw water pump or the circulating pump?

The raw water pump impeller is changed preventatively as a routine maintenance item. Some change it every other year while others change it less frequently. A lot depends on the water conditions (muddy, sandy shallow water usually means more frequently) that you boat in as well as how many hours you put on the engine each year.

The water circulation pump is only changed when it starts leaking from the weep hole, starts making noise or freezes up.
