Okay I will keep it as simple as I can, I have a 99 Merc 200 HP EFI, not DFI or optimax. I noticed this season the engine seems to smoke a lot. Called the dealer and he said the diaphram in the oil pump was probably bad, but not to worry, its running fine and smoking so you know its getting oil.

So does anyone have this issue with a similar motor above? It is oil injected but it smokes like crazy. Tons of power and no operating problems, it just smokes like spraying for misquitos.

Which leads me to my most current problem. I was out on the lake and the dreaded beep beep beep alarm started going off indicating low or no oil. I shut it down on the middle of the lake and inspected all the resevoirs, all topped off. Engine smoking/burning oil like usual. I crank it up and no beep, drive it two miles back to the dock and nothing, no beeps. So I started it up today here at the house and smoking more than usual (refer to the question above) and running fine. The boat has tons of power, 120PSI on each cylinder. Well it started the beeping thing again after 5 minutes or so of idling so I shut it down. And thats where I am now.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot the beeping? Its obviously not the fact that its not getting oil as I can smell it and see its getting oil. Any suggestions?

Re: 1999 Mercury EFI 200 HP, got some problems

I have a 1997 Mariner 200 hp. Had same problem. Mechanic replaced switch box and fixed it. One year later had same oil signal after a few minutes running. I replaced oil system sensor box. No help. Tapped the sensor that detects oil injector pump operation on left side of engine. For a year and a half no problem. Once I let the main oil reservoir get low and had to loosen the cap on the engine reservoir to get the air out so the float would go to top. My problem now is an overheat warning above 4,000 rpm with normal pissing out the back and new thermostats. Good luck.
