Re: 1999 merc 135 v6 ,more hp?
Horsepower is not always the answer, infact sometimes a bigger motor will make the boat perform worse. The hull is realy the main determining factor in boat performance, for example; a flat bottom boat would never run as fast as a V bottom, regardless of horse power.

Sounds like you would like to plane easier, accellerate faster, and get more top speed. You have any number of options, props, hydrofoils, trim tabs and smart tabs.

The real name of the game is to make the boat hull as efficient as possible, then go for the best match in props.

Look at an airplane, they hull (wings and tail) changes to suite the conditions ( speed, load, wind current, power)but the motor position never changes.

What part of your boat hull changes to suite your constantly changing conditions. Water is a liquid, and air is a liquid.

A hydrofoil will help you out of the hole a little, but since it does not change (like flaps on a wing) the lift increases after you are on plane and pushes the bow down which will result in a loss of top speed. This is not so common on boats that do less than 30mph as the speed is not enough to crate the extra lift, but if your boat is a 40 mph boat it will run bow heavy even with triming the motor.

Remember the prop is there to propell - not to change boat attitude.

Trim tabs change the hull shape to suite the conditions. Some are opperated from the helm, and Smart Tabs are self regulating. Check this site forums for more info.

If you put Smart tabs on the boat you will think you have added the extra 75 HP you were looking for, and with a reduction in fuel consumption not an increase.
