Have a 1999 Tohatsu M70C that runs good, except the lower unit stuck in forward.
Doesn't make a noise in other words no gear crunching, etc.
Shop wants almost two grand in parts to fix.... housing and prop shaft are ok though.
So the quest is on for a used lower, however the Shop has not been any help
so far on what other models will work.
Anyone on iboats know or who I can call to find out?

Thanks in advance

Take it to a different shop. The gears aren't that expensive and shop labor shouldn't exceed $300.00. They are about $1000.00 too high.

Thanks for your reply however I still have the same question about other models that would interchange, more now than before.
Picked up my lower unit and the parts they said came out of it.
Guess what I do need every part to be replaced now.... I cannot say for sure about the internal parts since I could not see them however I did pull the lower myself so I know about the ones I could see one of which was the driveshaft where it goes into the powerhead and that part was good ie. the splines on the shaft were perfect. Well guess what the one I got back is junk! The splines are all destroyed near the end so there is no way it is going back up into any power head. From what I could tell every part they gave me back is junk except my housing and maybe the prop shaft. Either that is not the part I took them or they made sure I could not use it. Oh and the part they said was bouncing around inside my lower doing all the damage to everything is a broken pin which is round and the marks on a lot of “my” bad parts were not made by anything round.
The driveshaft looks like they clamped the spline end tight in a vise and then took a pipe wrench to the shaft to twist it since they are teeth marks on the drive shaft which were not there before.
Attaching pics, please forgive my poor camera skills. Hopefully the pics will show up well on the forum since the file cannot be over a certain size. If you want the high res. ones PM me with your email address and I will send them.
If anyone is considering having their Tohatsu/Nissan worked on in FL PM me and I will let you know which town (only one auth. shop there) this shop is in. Plus if anyone wants to see more pics I can try and take some of the bottom of the motor where the splines go in to show that does not match the damage on the driveshaft. And if anyone is thinking well this guy messed up his own driveshaft (for whatever reason) I have their quote to repair my lower which includes a driveshaft.
Will not name names since I am not a lawyer and do not want to hire one. This has already cost me two times off work plus the almost $200 they charged to take apart my lower and the lower is going to cost more to fix due to the extra special care they took of it for me, however people have the right to be warned about places like this since they are linked from the Tohatsu website.

The 70 C, 60 C and 90 A all take the same lower unit. It does sound like they made it worse to escalate your repair bill....However, if they didn't use the special tool that fits on the end of the driveshaft, when they pulled the pinion gear off, its posible that they destroyed the splines on the shaft through stupidity rather than malice.

Hi Elvin:

Thank you so much for your answer which will hopefully save me time, effort, and money so I can get that 70 back on the water.
It's really great when people like you put forth the extra effort to help out.
