Was out fishing Saturday when my motor decided to quit, not sure if it is a blown motor or lower unit. I'm by no means a mechanics, but I do no that I'm unable to move the fly wheel. What can I do to diagnose the problem and try to determine if it is the motor or lower unit. Any input greatly apprecaited.

Put it in nuteral and try to turn flywheel. If it turns, its the L U. If not, its engine. What kind of motor are we talking about?

Well Lodge... I disagree with ya...

The driveshaft and LU gears always turn, even when it is in neutral. So, if a hunk of something is caught in the gears, or the driveshaft broke, it won't matter if the LU is in N or not. The LU (& engine) will still be locked up. The shifter just moves the clutch dog to engage either the fwd or rev gear. Dog then turns the propshaft.

IMHO, best to drop the LU. If power head then turns freely, then you know where the prob is.

It was weird to motor just basically shut down, no weird noises from the motor. Going to drop the lower unit tonight. It is a Johnson 30hp model BJ30ElEEC

Agree with BF, you have to drop the lower to determine why the flywheel will not turn. Although the lower would not stop the motor from running. Have you checked spark and compression to start?
