1999 Johnson 30hp not going into gear

I have a 1999 Johnson 30hp 2 stroke on my 13' Boston Whaler, starts fine but recently it will not go into gear (forward and reverse). When I move throttle forward it revs very high like it wants to jump into gear but never does. Any thoughts/recommendations on what I should check out?
