last fall the motor sounded like a tractor at high speeds, the mechanic said a clip had broken and i had missing gear teeth in lower unit, cost to repair was 1200.00 now motor will not shift to neutral from foward gear, to shift to neutral i have to go to reverse(which chatters) then to neutral. is this problem related to previous repair. Also when going into forward gear and increasing throttle it is very stiff, much more than when boat new. I have purchased a manuel and I am going to try and repair this problem myself since I no longer have funds to pay someone

It almost sounds like the cables are getting stiff. Also what rpm is the motor idleing at in neutral? Also verify that the shift interupter switch is working properly.

If its idleing too high or the switch does not work it will be a bear to get out of gear. And possibly go past neutral right into reverse. NOT GOOD!!

Since you just paid to have the gearcase rebuilt the shop should have set the idle and verified the switch operation. I would recommend taking it back as you dont want to tear up the new gears because of this. Or hurt someone.

Good luck!
