Hello 1999 Johnson 115. I had some water intrusion in the gear case and via pressure tests I have determined it came in through the drive shaft seals. I am noticing that the drive shaft seems to have a fair amount of back and forth (radial) play in it. I have seen other posts on this subject but I do not have a dial indicator to do a precise measurement. I made a quick video of the movement with a square for reference, please view it here:

Also note the shiny spot on driveshaft from contact with the water pump housing.

Is this too much movement? I have to remove the bearing / seal carrier anyway to replace the seals so should I just replace the bearing anyway?

Thank you

Also does anyone know if the drive shaft bearing carrier can be unbolted and pulled up over the drive shaft to replace the seals and bearing without removing the drive shaft itself?

Thanks

Thanks, it looks like I will have to shim the drive shaft assembly to maintain correct pinion height if I replace this thrust bearing, is this true?

You can change the bearing and not worry about the shimming. That play is probably OK especially if it's a 2 piece shaft.

Thanks everyone for the help so far.

Here is an update:
I have removed the drive shaft bearing carrier, shim, thrust washer and thrust bearing. The bearing inside the actual bearing carrier is not shown in any diagrams I can find!

Please take a look at these pictures and let me know what you think. I'm not sure what normal wear on these is, you guys are the experts. None of the bearings seem to be worn to the point that would cause this much play and hopefully it is just normal 2 piece drive shaft play.

Notice the wear on the inside of the actual gear case where the thrust washer and bearing are.
