The gauges generally have power (+12 volts) daisy chained from the first gauge in the string to all of the others. Same applies to ground and the internal light. If none of the gauges work, then I would suspect either loss of +12 volts or loss of the ground on the first gauge in the string. If the internal lights work on all gauges then that says the ground is probably ok as well since ground for the gauge and ground for the light are generally shared. If both +12 volts and ground are proven ok, that leaves 1) a dash full of bad gauges (highly unlikely) or loss of the "S" (sender) feed to each gauge (also highly unlikely) since the Voltmeter doesn't have a sender signal. Another clue to the issue is that if the voltmeter is not working, you definitely do NOT have +12 volts and/or ground.
