New owner of older boat. I replaced a 550 amp battery with a 750 amp battery. I am now having battery charge issues. Is the alternator associated with this engine capable of charging a 750 amp battery ? I think I shot myself in the foot getting a larger capacity battery that the engine cannot properly charge. I currently pull the 750 amp battery and trickle charge at home every other outing. Does anyone know what the factory recommended battery amp rating was for this motor in 1999 by Evinrude ? I currently use a "starting battery" as opposed to a deep cycle. I run no electronics except for fuel gauge, tach, and factory warning lights. Speedo was disconnected. Any ideas ? Thanks.

Yes.

I cannot help but wonder why you changed the battery. Could it be you were having charging problems all along?

Changing to a 750amp-hour battery ought not to be an issue. Have you actually tested the voltage output of the charging system while it's running?

There was an old 550 amp walmart battery in it when I bought it. Left me dead in the water once. Did not know the history or age of the battery so I ditched it and started with a new, fresh quality battery. Have not tested the voltage while running. On start up dash mounted voltmeter pops to 13.8 for a few minutes then drops down to about 12. On a three hour trip it has dipped as low as 10 which is way too low.

Right. Which if you trust that gage, then it's something else causing the charge issue. Basically if a battery will start your engine, then the battery is fine. Charging system issue's. Sorry to hear it!

You've got charging system probs on your mtr. Either a bad voltage regulator or stator. Go to CDI Electronics.com and you may get some info on how to check it out.
