I have a 175 johnson that has feul problems I can't figure out. When I first crank the engine and run down the river it runs great. after I fish for an hour or so and It will crank great and will idle just fine, but as soon as you put it in gear it will not take the gas. If you hit the choke as soon as you put it in gear it runs fine. I should not have to keep hitting the choke button everytime i take off. It has an idle speed aroun 850-900 rpm. This is a real pain anyone know what might cause this. any help would be great

Any other symptoms?
Has it been like this since you got it, or when did it start?
When did you last rebuild your carbs?
Any recent maintenance?
VRO still connected, or premix?

welcome to iboats!

Motor was rebuilt when I bought it vro pump was disconnected motor runs great first time you crank it up until you cut it off . IT will idle good but soon as you put it in gear it boggs down but you can crank it right back up push it in gear an push in on choke an it will take off. Thanks

Re: 1999 175 johnson boggs

generally, you expect that activating the choke will flood & kill a properly running motor - your result indicates a fuel delivery problem, like a clogged/partially clogged idle circuit - that motor will easily idle on 5 maybe even 4 cylinders and sound perfectly happy doing so. Most likely a carb rebuild will do the trick - might be wise to do a compression test first, no point spending money on a motor with bad compression.....
