I am looking at a boat that has a 1999 120hrs force motor. What type of problems can these motors have and are they a reliable motor? Who makes them? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1999 120 Force

Profile?? Force/Chrysler Been around a LONG time. That Force was made by Mercury. It used the Force powerhead and Mercury lower unit.
It's a bit harder on gas and the oil needs to be mixed in.So it smokes a bit more.
As long as you keep the carbs adjusted and don't overheat it and change the oil in the lower. It will last a long time.
Do a compression test.Any more than 10% difference is a sign of trouble.
Mine are 23 years old and still run good.J

Re: 1999 120 Force

I picked up a 1998 120 Force about 2 months ago, so far don't regret it. Make sure you're getting a good deal on it though, it's an older engine and not "brand name".

Check the compression, the top and bottom cyclinders are 135-145 psi, and the middle two are 145-155 in the manual. I may be off a little but the top and bottom are rated about 10 psi different. From what I read anything over 120 and less than %15 difference is ok.

had to change the impeller when i first got it but that's been all so far. Should be easy to work on if you got the patience to read a manual.

Re: 1999 120 Force

1999 was the last year Force motors were made.

It can be difficult to find a dealer that will service them.

If you do your own service, diagnostics, and repairs, this is not a problem.

The motor is on a Tracker Magna 17 fishing boat. The boat is in great shape and is on a custom trailer. The asking price is 4100.00 does this sound fair?

Go to the blue book.No idea what I'd spend on a boat I can't see.
If you like it and think it's a good deal then buy.J

Re: 1999 120 Force

Check NADA on hull, motor, trailer. Somtimes NADA only only shows prices for hulls w/motor.

Then go to ebay/craigslist and find a similiar if not the same boat for sale. Take 10-20% off the asking if they don't say firm and that's the realistic price.

use http://www.allofcraigs.com/ , you can search every city with that link just to see what people are asking for it around the country.

Also see if the owner will let you test drive, offer to pay for gas/launch fee's. I did this with a 1998 w/ 98 force boat I recently bought. Owner didn't want so I told him "good luck with the sale" and he came around quickly.

If everything checks out pull the trigger and catch some bass.
