1998 Yamaha XL760 Waverunner stuck in reverse

After shifting into reverse when backing up in idle speed the handle will not shift back to forward. Shifts fine when engine is not running. Have to shut off engine in water to shift back into forward. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Problem used to be intermittent now it is consistent.

Adjust the reverse gate cable (gate end), such that it doesn't go quite as far into the reverse position..

The yamahas have a slight notch that can grab too much.

It'll take you 5minutes. Loosen the locknut, slide the sleeve forward to release the female ball connector and screw the connector to change length.
