1998 Tracker 9.9 gearcase

Can someone tell me what these 2 holes are for? Bought this motor and was getting it setup and noticed them. Any help?

This is the first Mercury I've ever owned. I googled it and found 1 pic and it had the holes. I just wanted to know if this was normal??

Is this is a long shaft motor meant for a sailboat ?------Those holes were sometimes used to get better thrust in REVERSE.-----Keeps exhaust away from messing with prop in reverse.-----Do not like this answer ?---- then talk to a dealer.
