I have a 1998 Nissan NSF5A 5hp motor . I replaced the impeller and now I can't get the lower unit and and drive shaft housing back together . The drive shaft just doesn't seem to line up . I can get them about 1-2 inches apart but that,s it . Any advice or tips would be appreciated . Thanks .

Lightly coat with grease the upper drive shaft splines, insert lower leg, keep turning flywheel CW while pushing lower leg up, Upper shaft should engage on crank shaft. Check water pump grommet engages properly on lower water tube, if so, engine will pee right. If not, will need to pull lower leg and try again.

Always do the whole wp kit, not just the impeller. Make sure the shift rod, water tube, and driveshaft are correctly oriented as you reassemble. If the driveshaft strikes the block, you are off alignment. It takes patience and a good "feel". Once down to that last 1/2", turn either the prop or crankshaft a little to align splines. Then mate both parts, and install bolts. Then adjust shift, and re-install grommet in the leg. You are done.

And you have to get the "cam rod" to fit through the hole in the front top portion of the lower drive shaft housing. It might be easier to remove the cam rod grommet which makes the target hole larger. This was the most difficult aspect of re-installing the lower unit on my 6HP Nissan.
