what is the purpose of little holes by the gear fill, and why do I have silver looking grease coming out of them?

It was a silver color grease, almost looked like antisieze, I ran the motor for 1 hour yesterday in lake, no grease showing, maybe just showed up in the initial engine checkout in the water barrel I did? No more leakage, after the 1 hour runing on the lake. so I guess its alright.
However, during the run for 1 hour, I don't see peeing, engine not hot, exhaust water not over 125F. could it be thermState, hole is cleared.
lake is 78 deg., guess I'll look into impeller and pump.

If it's a 2 strokes engine that "grease" is normal, it's unburned combustion leftovers while running engine at slow rpm, if running engine at less than 50:1 expect to see more. The holes are lower leg vent holes. Being a 17 year oldie remove thermo, connect a hose there and water flush for some minutes to remove possible obstructions on the entire water paths, Check thermo cond, install a new one aloing gasket if extremely salted or corroded. Check impeller, probaly kaputt already.
