I am interested in buying a used 21 ft center console with a 1998 Mercury 200 EFI Saltwater Outboard with 300 hours on it. When I tested it, it started right up and ran well, except there was a change of sound/vibration at 3200-3400 rpm while getting up on plane. This vibration was just in this rpm range and may be normal. Current owner states this has always been the case. I apprecitate any input into this, and comments on the reliability of this engine. Thanks

it is common for mercury engines to have a very distinct growl in that rpm range on certain set-ups. check compression and ignition output to spark plugs, drain lower unit oil and check for water and metal. if everything is good, all should be fine.
