I own a 1998 Mercruser Alpha One Drive. It seems the drive has a vibration only on tight turn either way. I have taken the drive off the boat and the problem is not universals or gimble bearing. Also it had the vibration since I owned the boat. ( 4 years ) I did notice that the univeral ear tips did appear to have touched during service. I touched the areas with a grinder but the problem continues to persist. I may add there is no vibration at idle
in or out of gear, only as power is applied in gear. Also I have put a brand new prop on the unit to test with no change in results. The boat has approximately 80 hours of service. Thanks in advance !

Vibration upon the application of power(in all vehicles) is a classic indication of bad u-Joints. Some vibration on turns on a Mercruiser is normal. Excessive vibration on turns is indicative of bad u-joints.

I sucessfully used automotive u-joints ($14 ea) in my '88 Alpha 1. I do not remember the number, however, the auto parts guy matched them up easily.
