I am working on a 1998 Kawasaki 750. It originally would not run. I rebuilt the carbs and changed the spark plugs and got it running good on a flush adapter. I took it out on the water only to find that it was starving for gas. I found that the screens on the fuel lines in the fuel tank where clogged up. I cleaned the screens and drained the fuel tank. I was able to run the jet ski good on the lake after that. Now, a few days later, I am having some trouble getting it started again. What I notice is that fuel is not moving from the fuel filter into the carburetors. Before when it was running, I could see fuel moving in and out of the clear fuel filter. Now, when trying to start, I can see fuel in the filter, but it does not flow in or out. Before I could closed the choke on the carb and could see a little bit of gas spraying around the small hole in the choke butterfly valve when I pulled the throttle and cranked it. Now I do not see any gas when trying to do this. I checked to see if I had any loose fuel lines, but can't find any. I had to pour some gas in the carbs in order to get the engine to run. It has happed several times since. Can anyone help?

are you still using the fuel selector switch if so try to bypass it and go directly to the reserve pick up in the tank. also be sure the pulse tube is tight and not loosing any preasure or suction.

I am using the fuel selector switch. I tried it in both the regular tank and reserve tank mode. By bypassing it, do you mean running new fuel lines or do you mean just moving the switch to reserve? The pulse tube appears to be tight. I guess I can check to see if it is supplying some pressure to the fuel pump with a pressure tester.

bypass the switch means eliminate it totally

Re: 1998 Kawasaki 750 fuel/starting problems

Hi,

I tried to run the motor from a remote fuel tank attached to the fuel filter that is just before the fuel pump. I also tried to run the motor off of its normal tank. In each situation the carbs are not getting enough gas through their entire range. Is it possible that the intake is not sucking hard enough to pull the fuel out of the carbs? I am waivering between this being a reed valve problem or a fuel pump problem. I can see fuel moving through the fuel filter when the motor is running. Also I can get some fuel to move into the carbs when the choke butterfly valve is closed and also when the motor is running wide open. The motor often has problems in the middle of the range when you just start to open the throttle to drive fast. This is where I do not see any gas getting sucked out of the main jet and the motor starts to die off. Thanks for your help.

bad reeds will expell fuel out the top of the carbs, sounds like you need to go through the carbs and replace the diaphragms plus clean the filters etc

It seems that the fuel filter is clogged. Try bypassing the switch and install a new fuel filter.
