1998 johnson idle problems

bought used never run right, compression good 112-115 on all 4, carb cleaned, then clean and rebuilded and new floats, then clean again all new jets.all new gas lines. carb synchronization. new power pack,everthing under fly wheel new. changed the coils, new plugs. run good on muff no spiting runs smooth, run good in water above idle to wot. ldle about 5 seconds in water with the idle advance screw all the way in. don't under stand setting the maximum spark advance .how to u hold motor wot long enought to check timing without blowing it up unless u going down the river with a timing light.

Maximum spark advance has nothing to do with the idle leave it alone.

Already done that 2 ,tryed everthing I can think of, nothing has helped

Revisit the link and synch. Payimg special attention to throttle plate and timer base synch. As well as base timing.

Did you remove and clean the idle orifice and the passage behind it?

Sounds as if you may be trying to set the idle when the boat is out of the water. Can't do it. Boat must be floating normally, running, and shifted into forward gear.
Once you are there, adjust the idle rpm's to between 650 and 750 rpm's. Pay no attention to the idle timing-all boats are different-set it for the rpm's not the timing degree at idle.
