1998 Johnson Fast Strike 115 Hp Lower Unit Question

Hi everyone. I have a 1998 115 Hp V4 Johnson Fast Strike outboard motor with approximately a 21" Shaft length. I measured the approximate distance as instructed on this website (by measuring the length between the bottom of the cavitation plate and the top of the mounting clamp bracket).

It has some damage at the very bottom and I am wondering if it easily be repaired.

Alternately, I have found a used one on the internet that someone is willing to sell to me. His is for a 1997 115 Hp V4 Johnson Fast Strike though. He says the shaft length is approximately 18.5".

So my main questions are:

- Will the 1997 lower unit fit my 1998 motor?
- Will the shaft length be compatible (18.5" vs. approx. 21")

Thanks in advance

Re: 1998 Johnson Fast Strike 115 Hp Lower Unit Question

The 60 degree V-4's came 2 ways, a 4 5/8 dia exhaust hub and the small 3 5/8 exhaust hub. If its the small hub it will have a 13 spline prop shaft and the large hub will have 15 splines. The small will not work on a V-6 engine due to gear ratio and weaker design. If it is the larger version it will bolt up fine.

Re: 1998 Johnson Fast Strike 115 Hp Lower Unit Question

I just measured the prop exhaust hub. It is the 3 5/8" one.

However both my motor and the lower unit being offered to me are V4, not V6.
I will ask the guy to tell me what the exhaust hub diameter is on the one he's offering me.

Great point!

Thanks for your help.
