I'm thinking of buying a boat that has a 1998 Johnson 225 motor with 675 hours.

The seller says the engine was well maintained but never rebuilt. But i have no idea on what the usual life span of this motor, assuming it has been well taken care of.

Is almost 700 hours a lot for this type of engine. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

We service a customer's 175 Evinrude Ficht engine. (Not the same block as yours.) It's got over 970 hours and it's still going strong. (I know-it's actually a Ficht-that runs...)

There are johnnyrudes with 2000 plus hours on them. JBMD, look around on the forum and you will see that people run the heck out of these engines.

If I were you, I would verify that the engine runs. Get a sea trial. Get the compression #'s (make sure you see it yourself). and go from there. He the owner says it is well maintained, get some proof like records.
Hope that helps!

If you want to check comp. make sure they do it correctly. Warm the engine to proper operating temp. Then pull plugs and hold carb. Or plenum butterfly wide open then turn motor over with comp gauge installed. This will give an accurate comp. read. I prefer to do a differential comp. test, with compressed air.
