This is my first attempt at changing my water pump. Is there anything else other than removing the 4/5 bolts to drop the lower unit? A friend of mine thought there might be a pin that needed to be removed from the shaft that connects it to the power head????

1998 Johnson SPL 115hp

Howdy Jeff,
Welcome to iboats.
The first thing I'd say is get yourself a manual for that engine. First, there aren't 4/5 bolts, they're 7 and yes, you do have to disconnect the shiftrod before the l/u will drop. It's under the lower carburetor and kinda tough to get to but it can be done.
You can click on "Manuals" at the top of this page and get a generic manual or go to

Manuals

and get a OEM manual.

c/6

Hooty

Hooty's right. You will more than make up for the cost of amanual by doing the waterpump yourself. I think your motor has a retaining pin thru the shift linkage that you pull out then push the linkage inward to release the shift rod.
