My 1998 Johnson 114 v 4 runs great. However when shifted to reverse it only goes about 1-2 mph and can barely back up. Any suggestions? Linkage issue ?
You might see if the throttle advances in reverse. My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 control needs some hard pushing to accelerate in reverse. Likely just dirt in the control.

Thanks for your input. Ok I will check that. The rpm is staying only at idle level. Shift lever goes to reverse gear position but doesn’t go any further back. It’s at About 45 degree angle. In forward position goes all the way down to level position and goes full speed ahead.
