We have a 1998 Four Winns 180 Horizon with a Volvo Penta 5.0 inboard/outboard engine. We just purchased this boat used and all of a sudden the boat will no longer go into neutral or reverse. Any ideas what the problem could be or where we can start troubleshooting?

replace the lower shift cable. or you can try adjusting it. follow the instructions in your manual. adjustment threaded rods should be on top of your block.

There is no lower shift cable on a Volvo. ..just one cable coming from the control. You can take off the back cover of your drive to see the shift mechanism where it connects to the shift cable. This is also where you adjust the shift cable.

If you remove the plastic cover from the rear of the drive (3 5/16 bolts) you can see the shift cable and linkage. Remove the cotter pin holding the brass barrel (barrel threads to the end of the cable) then you can take the cable off the linkage. See if the binnacle moves and cable operates. You also could then shift the outdrive by hand. Take prop off first and run on flush muffs top see if the problem is in the drive or elsewhere.

On the starboard side of the drive look at the pivot housing where the shift cable goes into the pivot housing and out drive. There is a cable anchor that may have been left loose that will allow the whole cable to move.
