Why do these motors have such a bad reputation? I bought a 98 Robalo 19' cc rigged with the Force. I got a great deal on the boat because of this. I figured I could kill the motor and repower and still be in the boat at a good price. I have fished this motor hard and all I do is put plugs in it twice a year and service the lower unit. I use Amsoil synthetic oils and lube. Can't kill it.....

I am retiring my 1988 Force 125 this year...never thought i would keep this motor this long...have only replaced the starter motor and a few water pump impellars...change plugs...decarb every 50 hours...always used merc's best oil...added merc quickleen to gas throught season..compression still good...lower unit is wearing out and can't bging myself to put money into a 14 year old motor...mostly it's time for a new toy These were simple motors...no bells and whistles...easy to fix....oh well the times they are a changing

Setharies,

I've said it many times on this board, and I'll say it agian. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just older technology. They had their quirks, but so does every other engine.

I believe they got alot of their bad rap from the people that bought them. They were a price leader engine and many were sold to newbies that knew very little about boating and were clueless about maintenance. Not saying newbies are all clueless, they just haven't had the experience to know what to do to keep any engine running.
