Was out of the water this past weekend and all was good. Was running wide open for about 10-15 minutes and running very low on gas.

So, I pulled into the marina and put 12 gallons in (the tank was nearly empty). It fired right up... I proceeded through the wake area about 2-3 minutes then opened it back up... Within about 1-2 minutes the engine sputtered very quickly and then began to die. After trying to start it so many times I could only get it to run for maybe 3-5 seconds then it would die. Even when it did run for this long it was a very faint idle. I proceeded to burn out my starter in which I had to have rebuilt.

Meanwhile the boat has been sitting. I just got my new starter and I am back to ground zero. I could barely even get it to fire on the trailer. A couple of times it acted like it was going to run but didn't.

All indications point to the marina gas, but that is a reputable marina and I spoke with the tennant later that day and he said he had no reports of anyone having trouble after fill up.

So, what would you guys recommend? Drain the gas and put more in from another station? Could it really have been poor gas, and because my tank was so empty I experience trouble whereas others probably had gas in their tanks which prevented them having problems?

I am afraid I am going to burn this starter out trying to get it started..

Please help! :)

hello
do the basics first. test compression, test spark. if those two pass, drain the fuel bowls on the carbs into a paper towel and look for water. check your fuel water seperator, if you dont have one shame on ya :) . test to insure the filter on the engine is clean. good luck and keep posting

Thanks for the quick reply!!!

Is there any online resources that can instruct me on how to test each of those things?

Do I need to buy a manual for my engine? I am pretty mechanically inclined if I know what I am doing... :) I just don't have a lot of experience with outboards...

definitely buy a manual. it could have saved you a starter already.

i would definitely get a Clymers manual for your force. you can get one off of ebay really cheap. i have a 1999 that i have to tear apart this winter because im gettin water in one of the cylanders. i had the same symptoms as you, but unfortunatley, i was able to get it started and hurt it even worse. i am new to boat repair, so this should be interesting, but i am going to take my time, and ask a lot of questions here. good luck!!
